The article highlights an interesting and relevant topic related to artistic wood processing in Ukraine, where the primary material consists of natural forms of wood. This includes a distinctive branch of decorative and applied art–root sculpture, also known as forest sculpture. The authors trace the origins of traditions of using natural wood forms in the creation of various artistic objects, beginning in ancient times when folk craftsmen used them to produce essential household and work items. This approach allowed them to save physical effort, time, and material. At the same time, these objects often reflected the individuality and artistic taste of the craftsman. The study reveals that from the mid-20th century in Ukraine, with the development of industrial production and the increasing availability of factory-made goods for everyday use, the production of items using natural wood forms by folk artisans became significantly limited or even disappeared altogether. However, researchers note that natural wood forms continued to be used by amateur artists in creating unique sculptures, interior objects, and narrative compositions. This distinctive direction of decorative and applied art was quite popular in the country during the 1980s, but over time it declined. The authors emphasize that modern information sources indicate a growing interest, both among self-taught artists and designers, in objects and artworks made from natural wood forms. In the design space of the 21st century, items made from pristine wood forms acquire new semantic and functional meanings. Researchers highlight a contemporary trend in which artists and designers no longer strive for perfect processing of the material, but instead emphasize its decorative qualities, imperfections, and unconventional perspectives that reveal the natural beauty of its form and texture. Companies specializing in the production of interior items from branches, trunks, and tree roots are emerging. These works evoke the primordial connection between humans and nature, fostering an atmosphere of ecological responsibility and inner balance.
