ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA AS A FORM OF KNOWLEDGE VISUALIZATION: THE CASE OF THE MYTHOLOGICAL IMAGE OF THE DRAGON

Abstract

The article examines the illustrated encyclopedia as an effective form of knowledge visualization in contemporary book design and cultural communication. It reveals the role of visualization as a cognitive-communicative tool that ensures the structuring, interpretation, and simplification of complex information for better comprehension by various target audiences. The research is based on an interdisciplinary approach combining graphic design, publishing, information visualization, cultural studies, and art history. Special attention is paid to illustration as a key element of the book publication, performing not only aesthetic but also cognitive, navigational, and emotional functions. The study defines the main principles of forming a visual sequence: hierarchical data presentation, consistency between text and graphics, and orientation toward the audience’s perception patterns. A conceptual design framework for an encyclopedic publication was developed. The practical part of the work is represented by the author’s project — the encyclopedia "Dragons." Using the mythological image of the dragon as a universal cultural symbol, the study demonstrates the possibilities of visual interpretation of complex semantic structures. It is shown that the graphic reproduction of this image facilitates intercultural dialogue, reveals the ambiguity of cultural narratives, and ensures the adaptation of mythological material to the modern information environment. A comprehensive approach to combining original illustrations, typography, and an adaptive layout system that meets the challenges of digital transformation and the expectations of a young audience is analyzed. The study proves that the combination of scientific accuracy and artistic expressiveness ensures high informativeness and emotional engagement of the reader. It is determined that a promising direction for the genre’s development is the integration of traditional and digital formats focused on interactivity. The article formulates the methodological foundations for designing illustrated publications as a component of 21st-century visual culture and will be useful for designers, publishers, and cultural researchers.
