The article examines current trends in the formation of urban public spaces. The results of a study of world design practice are presented. The strategies and programs for the development of cities of different countries are analyzed, aimed at increasing the humanization of urban space. The difference in priorities in the study and creation of a project proposal in the countries of Europe, the Far East and North America is presented. A new approach to the formation of a strategy for the development of sustainable communities is revealed, which includes a thorough preliminary analysis of the state of the urban community. It is necessary not only to take into account the structure and dynamics of the development of urban spaces, but also to analyze the state of the local community itself, take into account the expectations of residents, the composition of social groups, and the potential for development. The methods of analysis and the influence of the results of the analysis on the formation of a spatial solution for urban public space using design methods are presented. Examples are given of how the results of the analysis conducted using survey, interview and additional thematic research methods can significantly influence the design solution. The role of the local community in choosing the optimal tactics for the development of the urban environment is considered. The main elements of public space, the sequence, balance of the territory and options for their filling are considered. Methods for forming the environment of space are proposed to create the appropriate emotional state of the visitor. Compositional, planning and spatial solutions for organizing space, color combinations, lighting for zones with different types of emotional activity are presented.
