PERIODIZATION OF THE DEVELOPMENT FOR UKRAINIAN TYPE FRON THE LATE 16TH TO THE KATE 19TH CENTURIES

Abstract

The article examines the evolution of Ukrainian printed type from the late 16th to the late 19th centuries through the lens of chronological periodization based on the analysis of representative typographic samples. The study covers the formation of Cyrillic printing in Lviv and Ostroh editions of the late 16th – early 17th centuries, the development of Baroque stylistics in the typographic practices of the Kyiv and Chernihiv printing schools of the 17th century, the mature stage of Baroque ornamental ligature (vyaz) and the gradual transition to civil script in the 18th century, as well as the dominance of the civil type throughout the 19th century as a phase preceding the revival of national typographic graphics. The purpose of the study is to identify and substantiate key dates in the development of Ukrainian type during the specified period and to propose a preliminary chronological structure reflecting the main stages of its evolution. The methodology is based on historical-chronological, analytical-comparative, and formal-stylistic methods of analysis. As a result of the study, a system of 15 key dates and typographic samples has been formed, representing the main stages in the development of Ukrainian type–from early printing at the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the revival of Ukrainian typographic graphics in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The relevance of the chronological approach as a tool for structuring the history of Ukrainian type is substantiated, and a preliminary model of its periodization is proposed, which requires further refinement through the expansion of the sample corpus and deeper analysis of regional and authorial features. The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of applying its results in type and graphic design, art historical and cultural studies, as well as in the creation of educational web resources and interactive timelines on the history of Ukrainian typography.
