Abstract

This article reveals the particularities of floromorphic motifs in the graphic art of Ukrainian periodical publications in Lviv during the interwar decades. The graphic art was examined in order to identify floromorphic motifs, classify them, and analyze approaches to their stylization. The principal compositional solutions characteristic of Ukrainian graphic art in Lviv are considered in the context of Art Deco stylistics. A typology of floromorphic motifs is proposed, which includes: decorative ornamental motifs (ornamental graphic art on covers, headpieces for recurring sections, vignette-like compositions); motifs of a realistic illustrative nature (clear, often narrative illustrations for sections, recipes, advertisements); stylized motifs within narrative compositions (as part of cover graphic art, illustrations for literary works, satirical cartoons, landscape headpieces); motifs in advertising graphic art (including trademarks); and motifs on the title graphic headpieces of newspapers and on magazine covers. The artistic visual language of M. Butovych in the graphic art of the covers of Nova Khata is revealed. The authorship of graphic works by Halyna Mazepa, Omelyan Lishchynsky, and Vasyl Dyadynyuk in the publications Nova Khata and Silskyi hospodar is established. As a result of the analysis of the graphic art, it was determined that floromorphic motifs constitute an integral component of the visual language of Ukrainian periodicals in Lviv at that time, and the proposed typology makes it possible to trace the specificity of formative means depending on the functional purpose of graphic art within the structure of the publication, emphasizing its prevailing decorative-structural or functionalthematic role in Ukrainian periodicals of Lviv in the interwar period of the twentieth century.
