FUNCTIONAL TRANSFORMATION OF VYTYNANKA: A REPORT ON AN ARTISTIC-SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENT

Abstract

This publication highlights an artistic and scientific experiment exploring the universality of the graphic language of Ukrainian vytynanka and its potential for functional transformation without losing its key characteristics.The methodology is based on a comprehensive approach that combines theoretical analysis with practical approbation. Visual-analytical and system-structural methods were employed, alongside methods of comparison, analysis, synthesis, and generalization. The primary goal of the experiment was to transform vytynanka from an interior decor element into a costume accessory, while preserving its artistic and iconographic features.The experimental stages are described in detail: from developing the graphic base, determining dimensions, and cutting patterns, to stabilizing and multi-layer painting of cotton fabric with gelatin and acrylic paints, applying the pattern, cutting the motif, coating with epoxy resin, and adding jewelry fittings. The selection of materials (epoxy resin, fabric, acrylic paints) and technologies is substantiated, and a comparative analysis of their properties was conducted.The results demonstrated that the decorative function of vytynanka can be successfully adapted to a jewelry accessory while retaining its ornamentation, symmetry, and iconography. The technique of applying resin using the surface tension effect ensured a durable, transparent, and aesthetically pleasing coating. The developed methodology is reproducible in a conventional art workshop. The created ornaments (pendants, earrings) retain the authenticity of vytynanka. The scientific novelty lies in adapting a traditional artistic system to contemporary applied art practices. The practical significance is found in the potential for developing original artistic techniques based on vytynanka, leading to a further expansion of product range.
