Abstract

The article highlights the features of the graphic and font composition of the book graphics of the famous Ukrainian graphic artist, illustrator, national artist of Ukraine Anatoliy Bazylevych as an example of harmonious artistic design of publications. Considerable attention is paid to the culture of Ukrainian book-making in the second half of the 20th century. After all, the concept of "book art" covers a wide field of artistic professionalism. Considering Anatoliy Bazylevych's bright creative personality, it can be noted that his graphic works determined and determine today the distinctive face of Ukrainian book graphics and its place in world art. Bazylevych's art is enriched not only by the psychological expressiveness of images, but also by artistic methods of embodiment. In the artist's work, humor is intertwined with sharp satire, harmoniously combining lyrical notes. The concept of book composition is logically included in the definition of the organization of various elements into a single artistic form. And the most important, without exaggeration, role in the unified system of artistic design of the book is played by the graphic and font composition of the cover of the publication. After all, the cover is, so to speak, the face of the book. In the content and style combination with the font group, the illustration becomes not so much a graphic object as a complete pictorial model of a specific artistic and literary plot. The graphic and font composition is primarily an expression of the harmonious combination of elements in the book and cannot be abstracted from meaningful and functional connections. Thus, Anatoliy Bazylevych, cooperating with publishing houses, created not only individual illustrations for literary works, but also complex artistic design of book covers. Such a creative technique forms a general spatially expressive composition of a figurative book ensemble. After all, a complex phenomenon – the composition of a book – is created under the condition that the artist consciously operates with the means of compositional construction in accordance with the logic of organizing the compositional space of the publication. Highlighting examples of such a complex approach to artistic design, in particular book covers, proves that A. Bazylevych's works are distinguished by a high culture of artistic layout design, in a harmonious combination of illustration and font design.
