HISTORIOGRAM OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF UPCYCLING IDEAS IN DESIGN THROUGH THE PRISM OF ART DIRECTIONS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

The article highlights the historiography of the development of upcycling ideas in design through the prism of the art trends of the 20th century. It is specified that in the context of military events, a rethinking of the meanings of design has taken place and continues to take place, and fashion is acquiring a new meaning. It is proven that such research is relevant, because the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation has accordingly affected the fashion industry. A set of research methods is substantiated, which are based on the application of a systemic approach as a methodology for combining art history, cultural studies, philosophical, psychological, pedagogical, sociological, and design knowledge. The definition of the concept of "upcycling" in the context of the study is clarified. Modern research on the application of upcycling techniques in its various manifestations and directions is analyzed: interior elements, architectural elements; in industry (electronics and electricity); in decorative ornaments; in clothing; in footwear. The historical aspect of the development of upcycling concepts based on the techniques of patchwork and quilting is clarified. Attention is focused on the fact that the most logical result of the war's impact on fashion is all kinds of restrictions, when fashion acquires a new ascetic meaning associated with the need for survival, and all other, decorative meanings seem secondary. The application of upcycling techniques of the 20th century is chronologically structured and described. It is characterized that in the most general form, the improvement of clothing design is associated with the artistic and aesthetic style and trends of cubism, neoclassicism, surrealism, etc. A retrospective analysis was conducted and it was found that there are quite a large number of examples of the influence of the ideas of abstractionists of the 20th century on modern design using varieties of upcycling such as: applique and collage, but such varieties as: kantha, kinusaiga, chenille and others remain outside the attention of scientific research. Prospects for further explorations in the direction of generalizing specifically Ukrainian design – clothing design and its far-reaching transformations are formulated.
